A longing in my life has been – how do I pray? How do I help others to pray? This song is one of the ways I pray – a way of aligning myself with a reality of truth. These words are old and carry a declaration of sorts, and when I sing them, I feel them changing me. In a world filled with vitriol, lies, pain, confusion, abuse, bullying, and anxiety, we can be lost in a sea of despair, frustration, and anger. These words call me to find something beyond, something deeper, something even more true than the mess we might see around us. These words call to me from the place of soul – from the place of our essence, what we are truly made for. Perhaps I am an idealist, but I believe in the magnificence of our souls – and that our souls can remember that we were made by, in, and FOR love. I see this song as a wild call, a fierce call to remember this truth, and to embody this truth. In these days, can we be a people who choose love
The words for this simple song /chant are rooted in an old story. The apostle Paul quoted sixth-century BC Cretan poet Epimenides of Cnossos, as he preached the words, “In Him we live and move and have our being”. Meditating on these words, and moving beyond a gendered concept of God, these words formed prayer for my life:
In Love I live
In Love I move
In Love I have my being
My joy and my hope is in Love alone.
This simple song came alive during the tour of 2023 during the Soul Care Retreats. I invited people to stand and sing acapella with me. The richness of harmonies that emerged and the devotion with which people sang, ignited a desire to record this song to help us to pray, to pray with a passion to bind our lives to the way of Love.
I believe that when we focus our attention on what we speak, it carries great energy. When I put my whole heart, mind, and body in alignment with these words, I feel the energetic beauty of what is possible when we live and move in love.
May this be a prayer for us all.
